Tillakaratne Dilshan’s Cricket Career
Sri Lankan national team: Tillakaratne Dilshan made his ODI and Test debut against Zimbabwe in 1999. From that point on the Sri Lankan took multiple roles for his team. Dilshan was featured as a middle-order batsman, opener, bowler, keeper, and captain of the Sri Lankan national team.
The batsman played a key role for his side as he led the Lankan lions to the finals of the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2007 and 2011. But the Island nation fell short on both occasions as they lost to Australia and India respectively.
The all-rounder earned his payday in 2014 when he along with the Sri Lankan team managed to win the T20 World Cup and establish themselves with the first major trophy in many years.
Since then Dilshan’s career took a downturn. After announcing his test retirement in 2013, the Sri Lankan focused on the shorter formats of the game. He was included in the 2015 World Cup squad but Sri Lanka could not go beyond the Quarterfinals stage. Dilshan did achieve a major feat later in the year as he reached a personal milestone of scoring 10,000 ODI runs.
He is also in an elite group of batsmen who have scored a century in all formats of international cricket. Dilshan eventually bid adieu to international cricket in 2016 after the Australia tour. He played his last ODI match on 9th September 2016.

This eventually led to a divorce and Nilantha then went on to get married to Upul Tharanga. Dilshan and his first wife also had a son together.

Tillakaratne Dilshan’s Controversies
Ahmed Shehzad incident: In a game between Sri Lanka and Pakistan, the Pakistani player Ahmed Shehzad reportedly remarked “if you convert into a Muslim, you go straight to heaven”. This was not well received by Dilshan. The Sri Lankan batter’s father is a Muslim and Dilshan himself was a Muslim until his parents divorced.
This made headlines at the time but nothing came of it in the long run.
No-Ball controversy: India had almost won a game against Sri Lanka. They needed just 1 run and had many Balls remaining to get the runs. Indian batter Virender Sehwag was batting on 99 and hence Dilshan asked the bowler Suraj Randiv to bowl a no-ball.
This was against the spirit of the game as the no-ball meant that the runs from Sehwag’s bat won’t be counted as the extra ( 1 run for a no-ball) would result in a victory for India. Virender Sehwag hit to ball for a six but it was not counted and led to a lot of scrutiny towards Dilshan and Randiv after the game.
