Twenty-year-old Yash Dhull has been selected captain of the prominent Delhi Ranji Trophy squad, which boasts experienced Ishant Sharma and IPL star Nitish Rana in its ranks, less than a year after he led the India U-19 side to the World Cup victory.

After a good debut in the Ranji Trophy the previous year, Dhull is most likely one of the youngest captains to have ever led Delhi, and that too in his ninth first-class match. Dhull has scored 820 runs in his first eight games played, averaging 72+ and four hundred.

The team has been chosen for the opening two contests (vs Maharashtra in Pune from December 13-17 and vs Assam, December 17- 20).

Carry out the tough transition

It is considered that the DDCA (Delhi and District Cricket Association) management wanted to manage the difficult transition from this season, and Dhull has been given the reins as a result of being one of the most reliable performers and someone who is endowed with leadership.

“Somewhere we had to draw the line. We need to have a transition carried out. Pradeep Sangwan, last year’s captain, had to be dropped as he hasn’t been measuring up,” a source close to the DDCA selection committee told PTI on condition of anonymity.

Youngest player to lead

The experienced Ishant has been chosen for the first two games. He would enjoy one last chance at IPL glory, if not a national call-up. Dhull, who is 20 years and 29 days old, maybe the youngest player in terms of age, but he has significantly more red-ball experience than players like Hrithik Shokeen and Ayush Badoni, all of whom made their IPL debuts last year.
