Bangladesh New ODI Captain

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is in search of a new ODI captain following Tamim Iqbal’s recent decision to step down from the post. The veteran opening batter cited a back injury as the reason for pulling out of the upcoming Asia Cup, set to commence on August 30.

BCB’s focus seems to be on veteran all-rounder Shakib al Hasan as the potential candidate for the ODI captaincy. However, the board is cautious and wants to ensure Shakib’s availability before making a final decision.

BCB chief Nazmul Hasan stated that the board is eager to know Shakib’s plans before offering him the captaincy role. Initially, Litton Das was considered as a replacement for Tamim if he is unavailable for the Asia Cup. But now, Shakib appears to be the frontrunner after Tamim relinquished the captaincy.

The board recognizes the importance of a long-term captaincy solution and is taking its time to deliberate on the matter. Nazmul Hasan explained that the decision goes beyond just one series and requires strategic thinking.

Shakib al Hasan has prior experience leading the Bangladesh team in the 50-over format, including the 2011 World Cup.

Currently, he captains the side in Tests and T20Is. Appointing a new ODI skipper is crucial for the Bangla Tigers, as the selection panel is unable to finalize their squad for the upcoming ICC World Cup 2023 without a leader in place.
