Mojang says that Minecraft 1.20.3 will be out shortly, but before then, the company has released one more experimental update.
Release Candidate 1 is the result of this, and it fixes one last bug. This patch ought to be the final one of its sort for the Minecraft 1.20.3 release, per the studio’s blog.

There’s only one change made in this Minecraft experimental snapshot, thus it’s unlikely that players would notice any significant difference in gameplay.
In other words, except from a minor technical adjustment made to explosions, not much is visible.
According to Mojang, the only patch notice for Minecraft 1.20.3 Release Candidate 1 is as follows:
- A bug has been fixed that displayed a disparity between the read/write logic of the explosion packet.
Players who aren’t too involved in the inner workings of their own server are unlikely to notice any changes at all because packets are managed by the online server protocols of Minecraft.
This isn’t necessarily a negative thing, though, as at this stage of the 1.20.3 update’s development cycle, Mojang appears to have fixed the bulk of significant bugs and gameplay concerns.
As said before, Mojang did state that the studio would have to provide a second release candidate if there were any significant issues before the 1.20.3 update is made available the following week.
Although it is uncertain if this would cause the 1.20.3 release date to slip, it probably wouldn’t be by much. The next Minecraft update seems to be ready to go for the most part.
It should be noted that not all bugs and performance issues were fixed in the latest round of Java Edition snapshots and pre-releases; more are probably going to surface following the release of the Minecraft 1.20.3 update.
Nevertheless, as the update appears to be in a decent and stable stage ahead of its release date, Mojang should be able to manage this with ease using follow-up patches and hotfixes when needed.
