NZ vs SL match report

New Zealand’s quest for a semi-final spot in the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2023 gained momentum with an impressive five-wicket victory over Sri Lanka at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

In a crucial match for both teams, the Kiwis showcased their dominance, putting an end to their four-game losing streak and keeping their semi-final hopes alive.

The victory was orchestrated by a formidable display of bowling, as New Zealand’s bowlers collectively dismantled the Sri Lankan batting order, limiting them to a modest total of 171.

Trent Boult led the charge with three crucial dismissals, while Lockie Ferguson, Mitchell Santner, and Rachin Ravindra each contributed with two wickets to their name.

Despite Sri Lanka’s opener, Kusal Perera, smashing the fastest half-century of the ODI World Cup 2023 in just 23 deliveries, New Zealand’s bowlers managed to regain control and keep the Lankans in check.

Maheesh Theekshana displayed resilience with the bat, grinding his way to 38 runs off 91 deliveries to help extend Sri Lanka’s innings to the 47th over.

Chasing the target, New Zealand navigated their way to victory despite losing five wickets in the process. Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra played pivotal roles, scoring 45 and 42 runs, respectively.

Daryl Mitchell further solidified the chase with a composed knock of 43 runs. The Kiwis achieved the target comfortably in just 23.2 overs on a wicket that favored the batsmen.

Notably, Dilshan Madhushanka, the leading wicket-taker of the World Cup, failed to add to his tally in this encounter, conceding 58 runs in his 6.2 overs.

All-rounder Angelo Matthews was among the wicket-takers, claiming two crucial dismissals for 29 runs, while Maheesh Theekshana and Dushmantha Chameera also contributed with a wicket each.

Glenn Phillips and Tom Latham guided New Zealand through the final stages of their chase. Phillips showcased his ability with three boundaries to ensure New Zealand secured the much-needed two points.

New Zealand’s semi-final hopes now hinge on the outcome of the Pakistan-England match scheduled at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on November 11. This thrilling contest continues to keep cricket enthusiasts on the edge of their seats as the tournament progresses.
