As the IPL 2025 auction approaches, major changes are expected within the Mumbai Indians franchise, particularly regarding their captaincy.

Various media reports are indicating that Hardik Pandya, who was appointed captain for the 2024 season after returning to MI from the Gujarat Titans, is likely to be released due to the team’s underwhelming performance.

Under his captaincy, the Mumbai Indians finished at the bottom of the points table, securing only four wins in 14 matches.

In a strategic pivot, the franchise is reportedly eyeing Suryakumar Yadav as the new captain, following his successful stint leading the Indian T20I team to a recent series victory.

This potential leadership shift marks a critical juncture for MI as they are aiming to rebuild and reclaim their dominant status in the IPL.

Hardik Pandya’s Leadership Journey

Hardik Pandya was reacquired by the Mumbai Indians from the Gujarat Titans in November 2023 and appointed as captain for the IPL 2024 season, succeeding the legendary Rohit Sharma, who had led the team to five IPL titles.

However, Pandya’s tenure was marred by poor performance, as MI finished at the bottom of the points table with only four wins in 14 matches.

His inability to replicate the success he had with the Titans raised questions about his captaincy and overall contribution to the team.

Suryakumar Yadav as Potential Captain

In light of Pandya’s struggles, MI is reportedly considering Suryakumar Yadav for the captaincy role.

Suryakumar Yadav has emerged as a key player for MI and recently led the Indian T20I team to a 3-0 series victory against Sri Lanka, further solidifying his credentials as a leader. His appointment would align with MI’s strategy of fostering young leadership within the franchise.

Speculation on Hardik Pandya’s Future

The decision to release Pandya is not without its implications. Should MI choose to part ways with him, several franchises are expected to pursue the all-rounder during the IPL 2025 auction.

Teams such as the Lucknow Super Giants, Rajasthan Royals, and Punjab Kings are likely to target Pandya, given his all-round capabilities and past performances.
