During the fight, Carini was visibly distressed and opted to leave the ring after receiving a few hits from Khelif.

She approached her coach to adjust her headgear but ultimately chose to abandon the match, collapsing in tears as she exited.

Carini later revealed that she experienced severe pain in her nose and decided to stop the fight for her safety, stating, “I felt a severe pain in my nose, and with the maturity of a boxer, I said ‘enough'”.

Who is Imane Khelif?

Imane Khelif has been at the center of a gender eligibility debate following her disqualification from the 2023 World Championships due to failing a gender test.

The International Boxing Association (IBA) had disqualified her from competing in the gold medal match after determining she did not meet the eligibility criteria, which restrict athletes with XY chromosomes from competing in women’s events.

Despite this, Khelif was deemed eligible to compete in the Olympics, leading to heightened scrutiny and discussions about fairness in women’s sports .

Reactions and Implications

The fight’s outcome and Khelif’s participation have drawn criticism, including from Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who expressed her belief that the competition was “not on an equal footing.”

She argued that athletes with male genetic characteristics should not be allowed to compete in women’s categories.

This incident has intensified the ongoing debate about the inclusion of transgender athletes in women’s sports, with various sports organizations grappling with how to balance inclusivity and fairness.

Carini’s emotional exit from the ring and the circumstances surrounding the fight have raised questions about the impact of such policies on athletes’ mental and physical well-being.

The incident is likely to fuel further discussions and potential changes in regulations regarding gender eligibility in competitive sports.
