Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat has made headlines at the 2024 Paris Olympics by reaching the semifinals of the women’s 50 kg freestyle wrestling event.

In a stunning performance, Phogat defeated Yui Susaki, the reigning Olympic champion from Japan, in the Round of 16, ending Susaki’s remarkable 82-match winning streak.

Vinesh Phogat’s victory over Susaki was a significant upset, as the Japanese wrestler had won the gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics without conceding a single point.

Vinesh Phogat Path to the Semifinals

Vinesh’s journey to the semifinals began with her match against Susaki, where she initially trailed 0-1 after the first period due to a passivity penalty.

However, in a dramatic turn of events, she managed to secure a takedown in the final moments of the match, winning 3-2 and marking one of the biggest upsets in Olympic wrestling history.

Following this monumental victory, Phogat faced Oksana Livach of Ukraine in the quarterfinals. Phogat showcased her skills and composure, winning the match 7-5.

Despite a late surge from Livach, Phogat maintained her lead throughout the contest, demonstrating her determination to secure an Olympic medal that has eluded her in previous attempts.

Significance of the Achievements

This marks Vinesh Phogat’s first Olympic semifinal appearance, a significant milestone in her wrestling career.

She has previously competed in the 2016 Rio Olympics and the 2020 Tokyo Olympics but faced early exits in both tournaments.

In Rio, she suffered an ACL injury that forced her to retire from her match, while in Tokyo, she was eliminated in the quarterfinals.

Competing in her third Olympic Games, Phogat is now one win away from securing a medal for India. Her next challenge will be against Yusneylis Guzman Lopez from Cuba in the semifinals.

A victory in this match would not only guarantee her a medal but also make her the first Indian woman to reach the Olympic wrestling final.
