With the entire world shifting towards inclusivity, same-sex marriages are a common sight as it is regulated by law and is considered legal. Despite it being a taboo in many parts of the world, several foreign cricketers have adopted this practice and are quite open about their same-sex relationships.

Many popular cricketers from abroad have been involved in same-sex marriages and it is not uncommon in countries like England and Australia. As same-sex marriages aren’t legal in India, we haven’t seen any women cricketer speak openly about any same-sex relationship.

With women’s cricket hogging the limelight in recent years, same-sex marriages of women’s cricketers have been a common topic to discuss on.

In this article, we take a look at a few women cricketers who have entered into same-sex marriages:

1. Lea Tahuhu and Amy Satterthwaite

Lea Tahuhu and Amy Satterthwaite

New Zealand women’s cricketers Lea Tahuhu and Amy Satterthwaite had tied the knot in 2017 and have been a living example of forward-thinking in New Zealand. Lea Tahuhu is a fast bowler of New Zealand and Amy Satterthwaite is a former all-rounder of the Kiwis, having made her debut way back in 2017.

The duo also has a daughter named Grace Marie Satterthwaite and she was born on 13th January 2020.

2. Dane van Niekerk and Marizanne Kapp

Marizanne Kapp and Dane van Niekerk

South African cricketers Marizanne Kapp and Dane van Niekerk are another example of same-sex marriages. After being in courtship period for several years, the duo tied the knot in 2018 and have been leading a happy and peaceful life.

Kapp has played 140 ODIs, 100 T20Is and 2 Tests for South Africa while Niekerk played 107 ODIs, 86 T20Is and 1 Test match for South Africa.

3. Megan Schutt and Jess Holyoake

Australian women’s cricketer Megan Schutt and Jess Holyoake were dating for several years and finally entered into wedlock in 2019. Jess Holyoake was previously the facility manager of Cricket Australia and comes from a non-cricketing background.

Schutt is a pacer of Australia and bowls with a lot of rhythm and rhyme across all formats.

4. Jess Jonassen and Sarah Wearn

Another example of a women’s cricketer marrying a non-women’s cricketer is the love-story of Jess Jonassen and Sarah Wearn. Australia’s spinner Jess Jonassen had married Sarah Wearn in 2018 and has been a huge source of inspiration for the LGBTQ+ community.

Jess Jonassen represents Delhi Capitals in the Women’s Premier League (WPL).

5. Natalie Sciver and Katherine Brunt

Natalie Sciver and Katherine Brunt

English cricketers Natalie Sciver and Katherine Brunt tied the wedding knot in May 2022 after the gruelling Covid-19 pandemic had delayed their marriage. They were initially engaged in October 2019.

Sciver has played 100 ODIs, 113 T20Is and 10 Tests for the Three Lions while Katherine Brunt has represented England in 14 Tests, 141 ODIs and 112 T20Is.
